Why Iceland?

It's our 25th Anniversary in August this year.  Like many couples we've had our ups and downs, but now that we've successfully and happily reached this milestone we wanted to do something special to celebrate all the fun and work that marriage can be. We debated on a number places to go, but had a hard time settling on a destination. Then I remembered reading an article about cycling in Iceland so we started looking into it as a possibility. Once we did we realized we had to go. It looked so beautiful and so different.

After we chose the place, we then had to decide what to do and where to go when there. We knew we didn't have time to see the whole island, so we had to narrow the scope. We also thought we would look for a race that John could run - how much fun would it be to be able to say you did a trail race in Iceland! So we planned to to the West Fjords first, where the race took place. From there we headed to Akureyri, which is in the north of Iceland. There is so much to see and do in the Diamond Circle, we knew we would enjoy that stop.

We also definitely wanted to see the Highlands area because it is so incredibly gorgeous. We decided to stay in Selfoss so we could make a trip to the Highlands, do the Golden Circle, and get into Reykjavik.

We stayed 3-4 days in each place, which was great because we didn't feel as though we were moving around too much. We still did a lot of driving - or should I say John did! He drove the entire time, and covered at least 3000kms in 13 days. Many days we would drive then get out and walk or hike so it wasn't consistent driving, but there were some long days in the car. Fortunately, because John drove I had lots of opportunity to take pictures.

As it turns out, this was the trip of a lifetime. Iceland is beyond beautiful. In reality no words or pictures can truly describe what you see when you are there. I took a lot of photos as you will see in the blog, but none truly captures the spirit of the island. I tried to sort the entries into segments so they aren't so overwhelming, but I included a lot of photos in each segment, so be warned!

I would say that if you have the opportunity to go to Iceland, take it. You won't regret it.
