Diamond Circle - Dettifoss & Selfoss

From Asbyrgi we headed to see the first 2 of 3 waterfalls, Dettifoss & Selfoss. Iceland is known for its waterfalls.

Dettifoss is the considered to be the most powerful falls in Europe. Selfoss is just upstream from Dettifoss so you can see both with a short walk. They are very different waterfalls, and each is beautiful in its own way. Like Dynjandi there are few restrictions on where you can go so you can get quite close to both.

The downside of getting to these falls is the road. There are a couple of ways you can reach the falls. John decided on the west route and it was a challenge, especially for the little Soul. It was a bumpy, gravel trail, basically. We made it though! And it was worth the effort.

John & the Kia. Little car has a lot of heart (and Soul)!

Walking out to the falls. You'd never guess there is a whole lot of water not far away.

Selfoss from a distance

Dettifoss. The people you see on the far side took the eastern road in. We will try that next time.

Look at that gorgeous sky.

See how close you can get to the falls?

Beautiful rainbow over the falls

Getting soggy from the spray

Black sand at the bottom of the Selfoss canyon

One of the downsides of the walk from Dettifoss to Selfoss was the "sandstorm". It was almost impossible to see at some points because of the sand in our eyes. Apparently this kid didn't appreciate it and took shelter the only way he could find. We had sand in every imaginable crevice, especially our ears. The pockets of my coat still have sand in them - and it's been washed!

Looking back toward Dettifoss

The cliffs are basically vertical

And crumbling

The top of Selfoss is a long, flat area. Many people crossed the flats to get as close to the falls as possible.

The sand. I think most of it ended up in our eyes and ears.
