The Golden Circle - Thingvellir

The next day we drove the Golden Circle. Well, John drove and I passengered. We knew we wanted to stop at Thingvellir, Geysir, and Gullfoss. We ended up making an unplanned stop, but we'll get to that later.

Once again it was a bit rainy to start, but we managed to always miss it when we were out & about. I can't say enough about how good the weather was for us. We planned for every possibility but really lucked out.

Leaving the Tiny House to start the tour.

The area between Selfoss & Thingvellir seems like Icelandic "cottage country". There are beautiful lakes, and tons of cabins & cottages, many looking quite expensive. It was very different from all the places we'd seen prior.

An example of a cottage along the way.

Thingvellir National Park is a Unesco World Heritage site. It has significant historical significance for Icelanders, as well as being geologically significant. I will let you read up on why it is so significant because I won't be able to explain it all properly here. Suffice to say that it is an important place to visit when in Iceland. It doesn't hurt that it is beautiful as well.

Heading into the park

Building built into the ground

The view

Thingvellir Church & the Prime Minister's summer home from a distance. I fell in love with those buildings for some reason.

I just like the pattern!

Fissures between plates

Yikes!

Not sure if this man-made or natural, but cool regardless

Our friend who is a glaciologist tells me this is "ropy Pahoehoe lava, typical of slow lava flows from a shield volcano (so not the composite - mountain - volcano that has explosive eruptions with both lava & ash)". It is very beautiful

The Law Rock (Logberg)

The Church is still active, though they are looking for a new pastor at the moment.

Duck or goose?

Baby

The water is perfectly clear. People have thrown all kinds of coins in all the ponds.

The Thingvellir symbol

Can you see the face? How cool!

Look closely and you will see bright blue fish. Two in the first picture, one in the second.

I didn't feel right about taking pictures when inside the church for some reason, so I took them from outside.

A beautiful cemetery.
