Landmannalaugar

Landmannalaugar consists of a few buildings, yet the population was remarkably large. It is the base for the Highlands, so if you are hiking in the area you are probably camped there at some point. People were washing themselves & their clothes, and cooking. Socks and undies hung everywhere - fences, tent supports, whatever worked. There were far too many people milling about for me, but once you get hiking it's much better. John likened it to Everest Base Camp - too many people for the area and supports available.

There are hot springs in the area where campers like to bathe as well.

Because Iceland's weather can be so harsh you are encouraged to check in with Safe Travel if you are going for a long hike or camping trip. We weren't going far so we didn't need to worry about it, but it is a good idea.

Landmannalaugar:

Sheep are everywhere in Iceland. Literally, everywhere. They roam freely. You see them on beaches, on mountains, roads, rocks, and so on. Everywhere. Cows are frequently seen too. There are brindle cows - so beautiful. I wasn't able to get a photo of one though. Horses are seen a lot as well. But no wild animals. As we drove & hiked it seemed like we should some sort of animal, a bear or goat or something, but there aren't any. Mostly sheep.

There was beautiful green stuff in this stream. Apparently most of the water in the Highlands is drinkable, though it might have a funny taste due to minerals in it.
