Diamond Circle - Hverir

Next on our list was Hverir, also known as Hverastrond Sulphur Springs. What an incredible thing to see. There are mud pots, fumeroles, and a big cliff behind. We hadn't seen formations like these before, and were fascinated by them. The downside was the smell! The sulphur smell was almost overwhelming at times. Still, it was worth the burning nose & eyes in order to see this.

There are warnings around about how hot the steam fumeroles are, yet we saw several people try to touch them. One man reached into the steam to test the heat and whipped his hand away instantly. He looked around sheepishly after, once he realized the steam is as hot as the warnings indicate. Some others tried to walk behind the steam and found that too hot. People are funny.

You can walk around the area to see the different formations, and you can hike the mountain behind, Namafjall.

The trail up Namafjall

Mud pots. If you look closely you can see the mud bubbling up.

The crust of the earth is apparently quite thin and fragile.

John's photos of the area, and a couple of cool videos. Imagine trying to touch that fumerole!!
